Why take the PSAT/NMSQT?

Mount Lebanan Academy's Learning Community

Why take the PSAT/NMSQT? If you are a sophomore or junior, taking the PSAT is becoming increasingly important. The PSAT now parallels the redesigned SAT. That means that your performance on the PSAT can give you valuable feedback about how ready you are for the SAT. We highly recommend that both sophomores and juniors sit for the PSAT test which is administered by local high schools on Wednesday, October 16th and Saturday, October 19th. Students register for the test directly with their high school and not with The College Board.

The PSAT serves four main purposes:

  1. It gives the student a realistic test-taking experience prior to sitting for the SAT.
  2. It is an early indicator of strengths and weaknesses, which is useful for reaching your SAT goals.
  3. It gives students a sense of how they would score on the SAT
  4. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation uses the junior year PSAT/NMSQT scores to select candidates for their prestigious Merit Scholarship awards.

The PSAT is not a required test for college admission; therefore, not all students may choose to sit for it. This is primarily a practice test; however, test prep planning is a highly individualized process. Students who get anxious, or those who have the potential to qualify for scholarships could benefit, however, from PSAT test prep.

We encourage you to visit our website at www.mtleboacademy.com and our new Facebook page (@MountLebanonAcademySchool), as the Academy offers classes to meet a variety of learning needs. Students can register now for our group preparation class which is being held on Saturday, October 12th. Class size is limited to eighteen. Students can also take a private tutorial and focus on their specific strengths and weaknesses, particularly if they feel they can qualify for a National Merit Scholarship. Please feel free to call if you have questions regarding which class may best serve your learning needs. Call (412-563-1413) or view the PSAT/NMSQT registration form http://www.mtleboacademy.com/registrations/psat.pdf).

Studies have shown that when students are well prepared for testing, they can eliminate test anxiety, increase their ‘test wiseness’, and improve their overall knowledge of the content being measured. We have been preparing students for the PSAT and SAT/ACT for over 37 years, and our teachers are well acquainted with the test.

The best preparation for college, however, is to work hard in school strengthening your academic skills. If needed, the Academy also offers tutorial support in all subject areas including all levels of math, chemistry, physics, and English. Maximize your chances of getting accepted into the college of your choice by getting tutorial support in a specific content area, or by joining our PSAT class today and begin to master the strategies for the PSAT/SAT. We look forward to helping you reach your PSAT, SAT or ACT goals so register early to ensure placement in this popular class.
